Hia, hope you’re all ok since I spoke to you last. Now I’m sure that you’re all getting really excited and quite nervous at the thought of moving to uni in just a few days! I know I was too this time two years ago! Ahh how time flies when you’re having fun! But there’s no need to be nervous you will all have a ball and meet loads of different people. But if you are worried about getting to know people and meeting the right people for you, as a cake lover I would personally bake your housemates or coursemates a cake before going, or if you’re not a dab hand at baking just buy one or buy some sweets. There’s nothing like bonding over a delicious cake!
As you all know, Freshers is renouned for it’s nights out and as you are in a new place with totally new people you might not know the best places to go on a night out. I remember when I moved to Cardiff as a fresher, I didn’t have a clue where to go for the first few weeks because for one thing I didn’t know where the night clubs were or which ones were the best and two we had so many club reps knocking on our door and dropping hundreds of leaflets of different clubs and events that were going on during freshers week; we were spoilt for choice and totally confused as to which night and club to choose! Luckily, I have looked at a few of the events that are going on during freshers and picked the ones that I would recommend, to prevent some of the confusion for you. Obviously this is just my opinion and I’m sure that some of you would want to go to other events that you have seen which is fair enough. You will all have your favourite club and event that you will go to religously throughout the year, and that’s just down to taste. Just to make one thing clear so that I won’t be turning you all into alcoholics by the end of this blog, I’m not telling you to go to all these events! That will most definitely give you a very bad dose of the freshers flu! If you do fancy a night in during freshers as you might suffer from an extreme case of a bad head due to the night before; perhaps you could suggest ordering a pizza with your housemates or cook something together and watch a film, that would be one way of getting to know each other a little bit better.
The events that I recommend for freshers week are as follows:
24th September – Moving in Party at Revolution Vodka (I went to this two years ago, it was good fun and there’s a ball pit there this year. Just go easy on the vodka; it’s very strong!)
24th Sep – Dirty Monday Disco at Oceana (Go here if Revolution Vodka is sold out, the Disco room is so cheesy but you’ve got to love it!)
25th Sep – Cardiff and Glamorgan School Disco (I went to this two years in a row because it was so good! It gets a little packed but it was so much fun dressing up AND you get your cocktails in a bucket with a spade!)
26th Sep – Radio 1 Xtra at Glam Nightclub (this club is for all you indie music lovers, lovely place for cocktails too or should I say ‘fishbowls’)
27th – Freshbook T-Shirt at Walkabout (I love Walkabout as I mentioned in my last blog. Definitely check it out as they’ve had a re – furb and you just genuinely have a good night there, but that’s just my opinion!)
If Walkabout isn’t for you there’s some other cracking events going on on the Thursday night so do check them out on www.fatsoma.com
28th Sep – Smack at Soda Bar (this place looks like a club out of TOWIE with it’s glitsy and stylish decor and it’s a really nice place for cheap jagerbombs and cocktails.)
29th Sep – No major event occurs on a Saturday you just do your own thing, but by then you’ll be knackered so maybe have that pizza and movie night then, just to re-charge the batteries!
30th Sep – Freshers Ball at Oceana (I went to this two years ago, I enjoyed and met a lot of my coursemates there. So it was a great chance for us to get to know each other a bit better, the only thing was that it was really crowded as UWIC, Cardiff uni and Glamorgan uni students were there so it was quite hard to get to the bar.)
This is just a brief guideline, you’re welcome to check out www.fatsoma.com/tickets for more information on events going on in Cardiff and to book tickets for them. I would recommend booking tickets for any event you go to during freshers as there is a high chance that you won’t get in without one if you chance it at the door as it could be sold out and you even might be able to skip the queue with a ticket!
Most importantly go out and have fun because you’re only a fresher once, but be careful and make sure you make it to your induction in the day!!
See you out! Take care, Sian x
