As Freshers is just around the corner and I’m sure you’re all busy preparing for university; packing and buying lots of new things to put in your new room. I thought maybe sharing one of my experiences of freshers would give you a better insight to you as life during Freshers!
My first Freshers was a lot of fun. I remember being quite nervous but mostly really excited at the thought of meeting new people and experiencing different things. On my first day of Freshers I met my course mates. There’s only 8 of us so it was quite easy to get to know everyone that day. We all decided to go to the smurfs party at Walkabout that night (now one of my favourite clubs in Cardiff, do check it out!). So me being me went all out and covered nearly my whole body in fluorescent blue paint/ I then went to one of my course mates flats to meet the rest, but as I entered the flat I knew that I’d gone to a little bit too much effort as people had just painted their arms or just one bit of their body where I’d gone all out – even my face was fluorescent blue! So there I was standing in a room full of people I had only just met that day looking like a right plonker all in blue! I’m just glad that my face was painted blue so that they couldn’t see me turn bright red in embarrassement. Luckily everyone found it hilarious and it broke the ice a bit! There was only one thing for it and that was to get a drink and quickly!
As soon as we hit Walkabout I didn’t have a clue what to get to drink so one of my coursemates bought me a ‘snake bite’ which is basically half lager half cider with a pathetic amount of blackcurrant to take away the vile taste! This was obviously a very strong drink and wasn’t very nice but because my course mate had bought it I thought it would be rude for me not to drink it! I then had some delightful strawberry jelly vodka which is basically exactly what it says on the tin, these went down a little bit too easy and before I knew it I was loving life bouncing on a bouncy castle in the middle of Walkabout until 3am totally forgetting about my 10am lecture I had the next day!
As I arrived back at my flat trying very hard not to wake any of my housemates up, I jumped staright into the shower still covered in blue. Most of it came off that night to my delight, so I jumped into bed suddenly realising that I’d have to get up in 5 hours to go to my 10am lecture. As I woke up I realised that I had a bit of blue on my cheek so I went into the bathroom to wash it off, and to my utter horror the only thing I could see were blue fingerprints and marks EVERYWHERE! It genuinely looked like around 5 smurfs had been showering in my bathroom last night. But I didn’t have any time to wash it or I’d be late for my lecture so I quickly went to my lecture. Halfway through the lecture I put my hand up as the lecture had asked how many people had seen a certain film. He then stopped and stared at me confused. ‘What’s he staring at?’ I remember asking myself as I thought I’d done something wrong. He then asked me what was on my elbows, and to my utter horror the blue paint had managed to stay on my elbows and the back of my arm. Thank god there were only 8 of us in the lecture, they just laughed and in the end I had to come clean that I had been to a smurfs party the night before. Luckily the lecturer found the funny side to it too!
If there was a moral to this story it would be to go easy on the smurf paint and ‘snake bites’ during Freshers and ask before hand what everyone’s wearing if you are going out on a fancy dress themed night. I still get the mickey taken out of me for that night but that night certainly broke the ice for us and it was definitely a great way on getting to know more people. My main tip for Freshers for you guys is to get yourselves out there; if someone invites you on a night out or a flat party – go! You’ll have lots of fun and meet so many new people. Sian.
